The National Register of Historic Places Itineraries and Self-Guided Tours - Self-guided tours to historic places around the USA

By Steven Skelley and Thomas Routzong

William Hazlitt said, "You know more of a road by having traveled it than by all the conjectures and descriptions in the world."  If you want to know more about the history and the people of the United States of America firsthand, the Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series by the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is a great place to start.

The National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's historic places worthy of preservation.

There are more than 80,000 properties listed in the National Register and almost every county in the United States has at least one place listed.

The Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series is a list of historic travel destinations that you can visit online or in person.

Each itinerary is a self-guided tour to historic places highlighting different communities, geographic regions and themes across the country.

According to the National Park Service, the Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series itineraries “expose you to a huge variety of places significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture.”
